Guide for Ecommerce Owners: How Not to Get Spammed!

How Not to Get SpammedAs an Ecommerce Store Owner, emails are your most highly used tools to send messages ,marketing mails and discount newsletters to your clients. Have you been trying How not to get spammed?  Do you know there are some words or practices that could get your mails marked as SPAM ??!
Amongst constantly evolving techniques of advertising, it is easy to think that good old e-mailers have lost their charm. Ecommerce email marketing comes with an argument on the ethical validity of data collection and with the challenge of something worse – getting spammed. Spamming, from being retailer specific, has become even person specific these days. Along with clever techniques, respecting people’s privacy is the key to find a place in their mailboxes.

A look at the U.S.A’s CAN-SPAM Act provides some useful guidelines to e-commerce entrepreneurs of other countries as well. Winning trust is the first step to establish any bond. Spam-mails scare receivers as they often steal identities (phishing) or insert viruses.

(1) Identify yourself in the mail: You should honestly mention that your mail is an advertisement. We know honesty may not be the best policy for a business. But the solution is to be creative and not deceptive. Your subject lines should not be misguiding. A step further – give the choice to the receiver to stop the mail service. This is again a test of your substance.

(2) Spam Triggers and Phishing Phrases:  After you get the idea right, the content of your mails has to be precise. We are primarily taking about techniques here. Be aware of two terms – Spam Trigger Words and Phishing phrases. Simple observations will help you avoid spam triggers. It is a tendency to attract or stand out that makes the writer of a mailer put ‘$$$’ or ‘###’ or ‘all capitals’ in your mail. Avoiding Phishing Phrases saves some grave consequences you might face. People open mails claiming to be ‘invoice’, ‘delivery’, or ‘ticket’ only if they trust the source.

(3) Perform a Spam-Check: A simpler way to avoid any blunders is to check your mails through any spam checker available online. The internet also offers a look up to blacklists. If you are in there, get off quickly.

(4) Technical Protocol : The last group is to make your e-mail technically sound. The basic principle is to make it as light as possible. Do not write everything in the image itself. Have separate image and text. Also, do not attach files that are heavy to download. Lastly, make the Internet Service Providers’ (ISPs) job easier. See that your domain key settings conform to the various protocols. You can always bring the e-mailer trend back if you follow certain rules.
