Up-sale, cross-sale and other tricks to increase your sales

All too often, boosting sales seems an impossible mission, and sooner or later every business owner wonders what more they can do to increase sales. And yet the available methods are so simple and obvious that it’s rather odd that not everyone takes advantage of them.

Below I have listed several methods of boosting sales that will produce results the moment you implement them.

1. Expand your selection. If you sell two kinds of chairs, expand your selection to ten. The probability that customers will buy from you will skyrocket. If you sell children’s backpacks, start selling adult backpacks as well, and you’ll attract more customers.

2. Reduce your selection. If you offer 500 kinds of ballpoint pen, conduct an ABC analysis and leave only what is really selling. Don’t complicate things for your customer by making them choose from an unlimited selection.

3. Increase consumption of your products. One ingenious fellow came up with the idea of printing the following on shampoo labels: “Lather, rinse, repeat.” It is no surprise that shampoo purchases promptly doubled.

4. Sell more to your constant clients. Notify your clients that you are now offering a new collection of jewelry, or new musical instruments and accessories. Publish an article on your site about how every stylish young lady needs to have a matching purse for each pair of shoes, and shoes to match each dress, or how separate suntan lotions should be used for children, women, and men.

5. Offer three pricing options. Remember how fast food restaurants offer small, regular, and large drinks? If you’re choosing between a 12 oz and a 14 oz cup, which would you rather have? The chances are 50/50. But what if you’re offered a 12 oz, 14 oz, or 16 oz cup, and the 14 oz size is called “regular”? How often do you buy the cheapest size?

6. Sell at higher prices. Does your customer want to buy bicycle wheels for $99? Convince him that he would do better to buy the $115 wheels. Is your customer drawn to a $40 pair of sneakers? All well and good, but the $47 pair looks much better on him – it’s the latest model, and there’s really not that big a price difference, now is there?

7. Offer accessories. Conditioner with shampoo, shoe care supplies with any pair of shoes, a matching ring with the earrings, a scarf to go with that coat, a belt for those jeans, bedding for mattresses, gift wrap, a helmet to go with the bicycle, brushes with paints, children’s socks with any children’s outfit, etc. You can make a list of possibilities for any product you offer.

8. Raise your prices. Your customers will not likely notice a 1% price increase, but it can increase your income by up to 10%.

These are eight simple ways to boost your sales. Implement one method each day, and you won’t have to wait long to see results. If you need help coming up with accessories or with other questions, send me your comments and I’ll be happy to help.
